Join us for The Conducting Institute’s 2023 Winter Session, led by Miguel Harth-Bedoya, for returning students and selected conductors-in-training. 

What
The Winter 2023 Institute will focus on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Opus 64. Through deep analysis from the fall online course, included with enrollment, we will apply all the learnings from the podium to develop a deeper understanding of preparing, rehearsing and performing this work from start to finish.

When
The Winter Institute will be January 2-6, 2023. The first session will begin Monday, January 2 at 9:00 a.m. Central Time. The final session will end Friday, January 6 at 4:30 p.m. Central Time.

Structure

There are three categories of participation:
Full Time,
Half Time and
Auditor. See below.

Ten (10) Laboratory Orchestra sessions will be scheduled.

Each full-time (FT) registrant will have at least 2.5 hours of podium time with the orchestra.

Each half-time (HT) registrant will have at least 1.25 hours of podium time with the orchestra.

In addition to the full-orchestra sessions, there will be string and wind sectionals.

Every registered conductor will be allowed to record their own sessions and use as desired.

Seminars will cover Music Theory, Ear Training, Instrumentation, Score Analysis, Instrument Technique, plus panels with faculty and professional orchestral musicians.

Repertoire

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Opus 64.

All participating conductors will learn the work in its entirety.

Categories

FULL TIME
As a full-time participant, you will have at least 2.5 hours (150 minutes) of cumulative podium time with the Lab Orchestra during the week. In addition to seminar and studio time during the Institute week, the participant will participate in 7.5 (seven and a quarter) hours of online remote Score Study lessons during November and December, 2022. See Online Prerequisite below.

HALF TIME
As a half-time participant, you will have at least 1.25 hour (75 minutes) of cumulative podium time with the Lab Orchestra during the week. In addition to seminar and studio time during the Institute week, the participant will participate in 7.5 (seven and a quarter) hours of online remote Score Study lessons during November and December, 2022. See Online Prerequisite below.

AUDITOR, IN-PERSON or ONLINE

In-person: As an in-person auditor, you will observe all Lab Orchestra sessions and you will participate in all conducting seminars and classes. There is no podium time for auditors. In-person auditors may participate in optional online Score Study lessons. See below.

Online remote: All Lab Orchestra sessions, seminars and classes will be live-streamed and recorded. If you audit online, you will be able to participate in seminars and classes and you may review recorded sessions asynchronously at your convenience. Online auditors may participate in optional online Score Study lessons. See below.

Online Score Study Lessons

  • Six (6) 75-minute online Score Study lessons will be given during November and December 2022.

  • The lessons will be live-streamed and recorded for later review and study.

  • All full-time and half-time in-person conductor participants are required to complete this course as a prerequisite to the Winter 2023 Institute.

  • Enrollment and tuition for the online course is included when enrolling for the Winter 2023 Institute.

  • The schedule for the live lessons will be published on October 1, 2022.

  • Enrolled in-person full and half-time participants, in-person and online auditors may participate in the live lessons. These individuals will have access to the recorded lessons for later review and study.

  • Access to the lessons will be provided via the Institute’s Thinkific.com platform.

TUITION

Full-time $2,980

  • 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of podium time with the Institute Lab Orchestra,

  • Personal coaching by Maestro Miguel Harth-Bedoya,

  • Six (6) mandatory prerequisite online Score Study lessons (75 minutes each) with Maestro Harth-Bedoya during November and December, included with tuition,

  • Participation in all seminars and classes during the Institute week.

Half-time $1,893

  • 75 minutes minutes (1.25 hour) of podium time with the Institute Lab Orchestra,

  • Personal coaching by Maestro Miguel Harth-Bedoya,

  • Six (6) mandatory prerequisite online Score Study lessons (75 minutes each) with Maestro Harth-Bedoya during November and December, included with tuition,

  • Participation in all seminars and classes during the Institute week.

In-person Auditor
- with Online Score Study Lessons $1,006
- without Online Score Study Lessons $887

  • No podium time with the Institute Lab Orchestra,

  • 30 minutes of personal consultation with Maestro Miguel Harth-Bedoya,

  • Full participation in all seminars and classes during the Institute week,

  • Optional: Six (6) online Score Study lessons (75 minutes each) with Maestro Harth-Bedoya during November and December. Auditor may participate in the lessons, which will be live streamed. The lessons will be recorded and will available for asynchronous review later.

Online Auditor
- with Online Score Study Lessons $1,006
- without Online Score Study Lessons $887

  • No podium time with the Institute Lab Orchestra,

  • 30 minutes personal consultation online with Maestro Miguel Harth-Bedoya,

  • Full online live participation in all seminars and classes during the Institute week,

  • All Lab Orchestra sessions, seminars and classes will be recorded and will be available for later review and study.
