Summer Institute: Three Weeks

June 12-16 and 19-23, Orchestra Hall Fort Worth, Texas
Join us for The Conducting Institute’s Summer Program, where students of all levels will explore the art and craft of orchestral conducting in a rigorous and encouraging setting, focused on teaching the fundamentals and establishing a solid foundation in this art form, both in classroom sessions and in front of orchestral ensembles.

What
The 2023 Summer Program aims to provide a comprehensive educational experience for both beginning and in-training conductors. Consisting of extensive classroom sessions and hands-on Lab Orchestra sessions, the three-week program will cover thoroughly such topics as:
* Fundamental Skills of Conducting
* Score reading in multiple clefs
* Transpositions
* Orchestration
* Ear Training (Dictations, sight singing, …)
* Aural Skills (Singing Bach chorales in multiple clefs, … )
* Keyboard Skills (Figured bass, playing Bach chorales in multiple clefs, …)
* Languages and Terminology
* Study of recitatives in multiple languages
* Knowledge of orchestral terminologies in multiple languages
* Score Study
* Analysis of Repertoire
* Preparing for Rehearsals
* Working with Soloists
* Mechanics of Conducting
* Application of all the knowledge above from the podium
* Video analysis of institute sessions and participants’ own previous conducting. -
When
The Summer Program will be June 5 - 23, 2023.
The first week, June 5 - 9, will be virtual, comprising conducting seminars on the chosen repertoire, aural skills and ear training classes, and other classes on fundamental skills of conducting. Synchronous participation from 10am to 4pm Central Time is mandatory for all enrollees.
The second and third weeks, June 12 - 23, will consist of hands-on work with the Institute’s Laboratory Orchestra, conducting seminars to discuss Lab Orchestra sessions, and ear training classes. In-person days will begin at 8:30am and end by 5:30pm.

Participation Options
There are various categories of participation, so you can tailor the program to your needs and availabilities.
Enrollment is open to motivated individuals new to conducting as well as to conductors-in-training. No conducting experience is required to apply.
FULL-TIME participants will receive no less than 2.5 hours of podium time with the Lab Orchestra. Students are required to participate in all classroom and lab orchestra sessions for the entire duration of the Institute. (we are no longer able to accept applications)
HALF-TIME participants will receive no less than 1.25 hours (75 minutes) of podium time with the Lab Orchestra. Students are required to participate in all classroom and lab orchestra sessions for the entire duration of the Institute. (we are no longer able to accept applications)
CLASSROOM AUDITOR PARTICIPANTS: IN-PERSON OR ONLINE
ENROLL HEREIn-person: Full participation in all seminars and classes during the Institute weeks. Observing all Lab Orchestra sessions. No podium time.
Online: Option of full synchronous participation in all seminars and classes via Zoom or asynchronous review of seminars and classes via Thinkific (asynchronous access available for 1 month after the Institute is over). Asynchronous review of Lab Orchestra sessions. No podium time. A 30-minute one-on-one meeting with Miguel Harth-Bedoya some time during the Institute or at a mutually agreed time to discuss personal and career goals.
Classes will be recorded for archival & review purposes, and may be made commercially available at a later date.
Every conducting participant is responsible for filming their own lab orchestra sessions, which they can use freely. The Institute camera will be used for classroom review and archival purposes only.

Tuition
Please note that the tuition does not include personal travel to and from Fort Worth, personal meals, and housing.
Full-time including 2.5 hours of podium time: $3,998 (we are no longer able to accept applications)
Half-time including 1.25 hours of podium time: $2,768 (we are no longer able to accept applications)
Classroom Auditor Participants (no podium time)
In-person Auditor: $290
Online Auditor: $290Financial aid is available and will be awarded on the basis of need. To apply for financial aid, please indicate in your application that you would like to apply.
